DID YOU KNOW?

Minority-and-Women-Owned businesses earned just 63 cents for every dollar that they might be expected to receive based on their availability to bid on prime contracts and subcontracts awarded by the city.

This disheartening data is just one key finding of the Denver 2018 Disparity Study that concluded a disparity still exists in using MWMBE firms in City procurement practices. It also unequivocally confirms the need for organizations like the African American Trade Association (AATA).

Black Business Concerns:

HELPING TO CARRY THE TORCH.

We salute the Denver City Council for developing the MWBE Program in 1996 to
promote nondiscrimination among the City’s construction, professional services,
and goods and services contracts and procurement practices.

While the City has made some progress, the City no longer needs to carry the torch
alone. As an organization on the frontlines of Black-owned businesses, we’re here
to collaborate with local officials and the private sector in further empowering
minority- and woman-owned businesses to participate in local contracting and
procurement opportunities.

Industry Concerns:

INCLUSION BREEDS INNOVATION.

National studies demonstrate partnering with minority-owned businesses creates a
heterogenous synergy that produces innovation and improved performance not
inherent in homogenous collaborations.

Studies also show continuous failure to embrace and encourage contributions of
Black-owned businesses will, ultimately, have a devastating effect on the growth,
economic development and competitiveness of cities across the United States.

BRIDGING THE GAP.

While we’ve reviewed national statistics and the Denver 2018 Disparity Study, we’re confident that with the right resources, lucrative trade and commerce opportunities, unwavering community support and skills-enhancing education, we can bridge the gap between minority-owned businesses and local procurement practices.

Denver can stand as a champion of MWBE procurement “done right” and the City can count on AATA’s broad yet tailored services, resources and community reach to lead the charge.
